Tucked behind some apartments in Sungai Ara is the small and quiet Lavender Food Court. Located here, is this gem of a stall Ah Huat Kai Si Hor Fun. The food stall is run by Penang-born Jethro Lee who used to be a long time resident in Ipoh. With a mission to bring the flavours of Ipoh to Penang, Mr. Lee boils two separated broths daily. This delicious broth which adorns his bowls of noodles is a combination of Mr. Lee’s chicken broth, boiled for hours and his prawn broth made from whole prawns.
The Menu
Mr. Lee’s offers his Ipoh-style Kai Si Hor Fun, Poached Chicken Rice and Lam Mee on his menu.
The Kai Si Hor Fun comes with flat rice noodles in the delicious broth topped with de-shelled prawns, strips of poached chicken and fresh chives. We ordered the Hor Fun set which consists of a bowl of noodles in broth with a plate of juicy poached chicken. Besides the broth version of the flat rice noodles, he also serves them ‘konlo’ or dry noodles tossed in dark soy sauce.
We also ordered a plate of crunchy lightly cooked bean sprouts with garlic oil and light soy sauce. Usually a plate of chicken is never enough so we added another plate as the meat was too yummy – it wasn’t chewy and was soft!
We also tried the chicken rice but personally the broth is too good to resist. So whenever we return to dine-in we usually just order the hor fun!
